Chapter 10

Monday morning, I sat next to Polly and looked around the room we were sitting in, waiting for the monthly psychology department meeting to start. It was chaos, to say the least. Everyone was talking about the murder, and no one was bothering to bring the meeting to order. Apparently, the weekend didn’t help calm anyone down about what had happened last week. Since David had been the head of this committee, his lack of presence made it impossible to forget. Not that anyone should, or would, forget anytime soon, but things had to get back to semi-normal sometime. Like it or not, we had a job to do. An important one, educating tomorrow’s leaders.

I’d obsessed over it all weekend too. In between thinking about Don, that is. That was something I kept trying to stop myself from doing.

While we folks were normally a chatty bunch, the gossip had moved to a whole different level today, with much speculation about David’s murder. It was no great surprise it was the main topic of conversation. It was much more exciting than the spring class development schedule, and there were still several people who were worried about safety. For some reason that wasn’t in my mind at all, even though a few of them had some good points.

The problem was, the more the gossiping went on, the worse it was getting. Someone needed to put a stop to it. Which would happen if the meeting started.

Carter was the appointed secretary in the absence of David, the one who was in charge of bringing the meeting to order. So far, he wasn’t having much luck. He had a pained look on his face and seemed like he was ready to bolt at any minute. No one paid attention to him. Unfortunately, he wasn’t being very assertive, and with this crowd, you needed to be. Even when there wasn’t a murder to gossip about.

“He needs a gavel or something to pound and get everyone’s attention,” Polly whispered to me. “By the way, where were you all weekend? You didn’t return any of my calls or texts. Did you go out of town or something?”

“Just busy. Crazy weekend,” I said, avoiding Polly’s eyes, not wanting to tell her the real reason I was avoiding her.

“With Don?” She winked.

I rolled my eyes. “No.” That was exactly why I’d avoided her. I wasn’t ready to talk about Don.

Carter was never going to get everyone’s attention without help, and I didn’t want to talk about Don. Helping him get this meeting started would benefit both of us.

I stood up on my chair and gave a loud whistle. Startled, everyone looked at me. Which was my intent, but it felt a little uncomfortable, so I quickly hopped down.

“Can you all shut up and pay attention, so we can get this meeting started?” I said to a few grumbles and mutters, but everyone finally settled down, and I took my seat.

Carter gave me a grateful look and officially called the meeting to order.
